It is inevitable, like the sun rising each morning
and setting each night or the pull of the moon on the ocean tides.
Sometimes, it’s a momentous change…a life event…like
marrying the person of your dreams, buying the house you’ve always wanted, or the
birth of a long-awaited child. It could be as exciting as starting a new job or
as simple as using a different creamer in your coffee.
Sometimes, that change is unexpected and not so
pleasant but we’ve all learned to deal with those bumps in the road of life. It’s
what we do. It’s how we evolve and grow. And maybe even learn.
But sometimes, that not so pleasant change turns
out to be the best thing that ever happened to you…or the character you’re
writing about. It’s an opportunity to try something new, a chance to spread
your wings and take that leap of faith. It’s the thrill, the challenge to rise
above whatever life has thrown in your—or your character’s—way.
I feel this way every time I start a new story and I
realize that change is the beginning of each story I write. It could be from
the heroine’s side or the hero’s side, but it doesn’t matter whose side the
change occurred on. It happened. It’s the inciting moment…the reason, if you
will, for the hero and heroine to meet and overcome whatever obstacle has been
placed before them. And isn’t that what we want for them? Isn’t that why we
read romances? For that happily ever after despite the circumstances that began
their journey?
Here’s hoping all the changes that occur are good
ones and turn out to be the best thing that ever happened!
As
always, happy reading!
Marie
