(Poker Flat #2 and Last Chance Prequel)

By Lexi Post

Two Hearts, Two Fires...and a thousand questions keeping them apart.

Cowboy Cole Hatcher became a firefighter to support his horse rescue ranch. He never dreamed it would lead him back to his first love, but a fire at the Poker Flat Nudist Resort lands him face-to-face with Lacey Winters. She may have started the fire that ended their relationship, but the sight of her reignites his long-buried feelings.

Lacey is shocked the hunky firefighter is the same man who dumped her eight years ago. Cole burned her in the past when he failed to stand by her, and she’s determined not to let him back into her heart. But everything about the new Cole is just too hot to resist. He melts her defenses, sweeping her away into a night of passion only to rip open old wounds.

Determined to prove who set the Poker Flat fire and the original fire that destroyed their relationship, Cole investigates both, unearthing ugly truths that reveal even more damage. Now, he's not sure he can catch the arsonist or the heart of the woman he never stopped loving.

It's Hot!

Hello, gentle readers! Hope you are all well and staying safe!
So, I’m going to preface this blog by saying…it’s hot! Brutally hot! Like walking into a blast furnace hot (hahahahaha, I’ve never walked into a blast furnace, but I can imagine this is what it feels like)! I’ve been hibernating in my house as much as possible this past week (even so, I’m feeling a bit wilted, but I always do in summer in Arizona…I’m a cold weather girl! Give me snow—as long as I don’t have to shovel it—and weather that makes one think of hot chocolate, cozy PJs and fireplaces).
Okay, enough of that! I remain thankful for Mr. Carrier, the inventor of the air conditioner, and Frederick Jones, the inventor of the portable air conditioner!
Being in the house as much as I have been has led to all sorts of good things. I binge watched Alaska Daily (and yes, I feel guilty about that because I could have been doing other things, but then again, I do need some downtime now and then—the day job has been crazy busy and my brain is a little fatigued). Great drama. I would recommend it to anyone.
The other thing staying in the house has brought is more writing time. Some days I did really, really well (surprising myself with the word count). Other days, not so much, but Anson and Tally’s story is progressing. I’d probably be a lot further along if I actually wrote in a linear fashion, but I don’t. I write scenes as they come to me then kinda puzzle them in later. I am currently on Chapter Four BUT I have started the big black moment as well as several other scenes. Yeah, this is how I do it. I’m sure this method would drive others nuts, but it works for me.
And that’s about it. Since I’m on a roll, I should stay on it. Stay well! Stay safe (and cool)! And remember to spread kindness wherever you go!

The Ex by Alafair Burke

You can't always know everyone, their personalities, their hidden side, especially in a city as big as New York.

Olivia Randall, a public defender, receives a call from the daughter of a former boyfriend.  It was twenty years ago that she dumped him, and she still feels guilty.  Since then, Jack Harris had gotten married and had a daughter, which led to a happy life.  Not long ago, a fifteen year-old boy shot and killed his wife.

Jack can't imagine being interested in another woman until he sees a replica of Olivia sitting in the park reading his favorite book.  He and his friends go on a hunt to find out who this woman is.  At a scheduled meeting with the dream-girl, three people are shot to death.

This is why Jack's daughter calls.  She begs Olivia to represent Jack because he's the most likely shooter.

Olivia can't believe Jack would kill anyone for any reason until a few loose strings appear in his defense.  Proving him innocent will assuage her guilt, but can she?

Her boss repeatedly tells Olivia she is wrong and the evidence points to Jack's guilt.  Long hours gathering evidence, talking with Jack and her boss, leaves Olivia wondering what love really is.

It's a curvy path to Jack's trial of the triple homicide, and is the real shooter free?  Is Jack the man Olivia remembers?  Or did she move on and find love with another man?

Happy reading,

Still Researching...

Hello, gentle readers! Hope you are all well and staying safe!
So, my last post was about falling down the research rabbit hole…you won’t be surprised that I’m still there, though I have expanded what I’m trying to find out. I try to learn something—just one thing—new every day. I hope my thirst for knowledge never goes away.
Here are two of the things I learned since my last post:
Took my girl Pepper to the vet (I have two fur-babies. German shepherds. The other one is Lacey). So, Pepper hadn’t been feeling well and I have a history of losing dogs too young (which is heartbreaking so needs to be avoided at all costs). I thought, maybe, she was having sympathy sickness because the DH isn’t feeling well either. Here’s a question I may never know the answer to: why is it that dogs—and maybe cats—always head for the carpet when they’re about to be sick instead of the tile or outside (even the vet couldn’t answer that one)?
Anyway, she wasn’t feeling well—lethargic, didn’t want to eat—just not herself so…off to the vet we went. Now, this isn’t as easy as it sounds…she’s a big girl. She weighs as much as I do and when she doesn’t want to move, well, it can be difficult. She will just sit and no matter how much I try to coax her or tug at her leash, she won’t move until she’s ready. Yeah, she’s stubborn like that and truthfully, she doesn’t like going to the vet. Can’t say I blame her there.
I finally get her in the office and…she’s fine. The vet thinks she probably ate something she shouldn’t have…like a bug. This is quite possible. I’ve seen a lot of grasshoppers this year and well, like a toddler, it’s always ‘what do you have in your mouth?’ at which point (most times anyway) they’ll drop it. I guess she didn’t drop it this time.
But here’s what I learned. The vet’s assistant showed me how she cut the Pepper’s nails. And it was easy. Oh my gosh! So easy. No struggle. No chasing them down. No holding on to them so they stay still. It usually takes both the DH and I to do it, both of us on the floor. (They're not small girls so I can't just put them on my lap though they do believe they are lap dogs). Not anymore. I can do it myself…because it works! Took five minutes to cut Lacey’s nails! Why didn’t I know this before!?!?!?!? I've been raising shepherds for over forty years and cutting their nails has always been a pain!
The other thing I learned? The answer to why the DH has not been feeling well for quite some time. Thank you Google. I researched his symptoms (because neither his PCP or his Gastro came up with any viable options) and found five possible things to test for, and what do you know, the thing he has, the thing that makes him feel so bad? After insisting (all right—down right demanding) that he have a blood draw and an ultrasound (because neither one of these simple tests were done before and I don't know why though it rather ticks me off), we have an answer. He has gallstones. I don’t know how many or how big they are, but we have an appointment with a surgeon this week so I’m thinking his gall bladder needs to come out. I’m hopeful this will fix the issue he’s been having…well, this one at least. He’s got a few others we’re working on getting a handle on, too. One thing at a time.
See what a little research can do?
Stay well! Stay safe! And remember to spread kindness wherever you go!

An Unexpected Find (Silver Falls, book 1) by Hayleigh Sol

I couldn't help but chuckle as the story began.

Sophie Grimaldi's Friday night adventure starts after work as she hustles to the library before closing to retrieve her reserved romance novel.  Her dates consist of pages of someone else's love story.  The funny part is when she discovers a handwritten love scene tucked in between the pages.

It's horrible.  It's written by a man.

She cringes as she reads the scribble.  Unable to stop herself, she edits the scene and tucks it back in the book and later returns it that way.

Jax Rowland is a bestselling mystery writer.  When his publisher wants him to add a triste to his stories, he finds himself at a loss on how to write a readable sex scene.  The best way to figure that out is to borrow a few romance novels and study their composition.

Accidently leaving his notes in the returned book, he desperately wants to retrieve them.

He reclaims his notes along with the edits.  Maybe, just maybe he can hire this  "editor" to do the love scenes for him.  Worth a try.

This begins an online love scene swap.  The scenes are hot and encourage Sophie and Jax to consider meeting each other in real life.

The introduction doesn't start so well.  As with the writing, the meeting has room for improvement.  With a little effort, will Sophie and Jax become friends or more?  Relationships can begin with a text!

Happy reading,

Dawn

PAINTING THE EARL by Lexi Post has released!

Painting the Earl
(Marrying a Mabry: Book 2)
has released!

Lady Amelia Mabry is determined to paint her masterpiece before marrying, but she’s struggling with the male form. It isn’t as if she can hire a nude male model or she’d be shunned by the ton. So when the Earl of Sommerset, who she’s privately dubbed the Golden Adonis, surprises her with a marriage proposal, she can’t resist making a counter proposal – pose nude for her, and when the painting is complete, she’ll marry him if he still wishes her to.

Andrew Crauford, Earl of Sommerset has just inherited his title, and as he’s discovered, his father’s significant debt. He needs to marry a woman with a sizeable dowry, but no young lady has interested him. Running out of time, at his friend’s recommendation, he proposes to Lady Amelia, but he never expected a counter proposal, nor such a brazen one at that! Now he’s interested. Unfortunately, the lady has an aversion to being married for her money, which means he must entice her to fall in love with him.

Though Lady Amelia has fancied painting the Earl since meeting him, she’s shocked he agreed to her counterproposal. As his sittings begin, she finds it more and more difficult to focus on her painting instead of her model. If she’s not careful, her carefully laid plans for her future will go amiss. Bargain or not, falling in love with the Earl before completing her masterpiece is not an option.
